United Kingdom Institute of Innovation Publishes How It Keeps Online and London Assessment Identical

The most common question at United Kingdom Institute of Innovation open webinars is whether an online degree is marked more gently than the on-campus version. The Office of Academic Standards has answered it in writing so that applicants do not have to take a recruiter's word.

Every taught module has one set of learning outcomes, one assessment brief and one rubric. Online and on-campus students sit the same coursework, submit through the same platform and are marked by the same academic team against the same criteria. Where a module uses a timed assessment, the window is long enough that a student in Nairobi is not forced to sit at 2 a.m., but the paper and the standard are the same.

External examiners — academics from other universities — review samples of marked work across the ability range and confirm that the standard matches comparable awards elsewhere. Their annual reports are summarised for students. A module cannot quietly run an easier online variant, because the external examiner would see the divergence in the sample.

Daniel Okonkwo, a hospital administrator studying from Nairobi, sat a finance assessment in an agreed window after a late shift. "I was examined to the same standard," they said. "The clock was adjusted. The questions were not."

Oral examinations for dissertations and professional doctorates are conducted online by panels that include an independent examiner, recorded with consent. The rubric is issued in advance. Identity is checked. A viva held over video is still a viva.

Academic integrity rules are common to both modes. Students may use digital tools as professionals do, but they must declare assistance and be able to explain their own analysis. Markers are authorised to viva any submission that does not match a student's prior work, in either mode.

The note is blunt about the one real difference: on-campus students can walk into a tutor's office, and online students cannot. UKII's answer is structural — named advisers, seven-day library help, recorded sessions with transcripts, and live clinics in more than one time zone — not a lower pass mark.

Staff across admissions, registry, teaching and student services are told to design every process as if the default student is studying after a full day's work: recorded sessions, published rubrics, named advisers, and a library desk that does not close at the end of one country's office hours. UKII will not pretend a programme is light. Applicants should plan their weekly hours before accepting an offer and ask direct questions at the open webinars if a page reads as vague.

United Kingdom Institute of Innovation is a historic British university serving a worldwide digital campus. Founded in 2009, it publishes news that is operational rather than ceremonial: what changed in a programme, who can apply, how assessment works, and how global students get help. Optional on-campus study in London sits alongside fully online pathways. Questions about the claims in this article should go to the office named as author above.
